Rape, Pillage And Burn: Songs of death, songs of hell
28/07/09 || cadenz
Rape, Pillage and Burn hail from the U.S. but sound as much Swedish as American. A quick look at the line-up gives an easy answer as to why… ever heard of Richard Cabeza? No? Go fuck yourself. This is apparently what the bassmeister extraordinaire has been up to during his years in Dallas, it’s like he got homesick and needed to play some anno 1991 Stockholm death metal, found some Yankee pals who like the old school sound as well and ta-dah! You’ve got the debut EP of RPB.
According to their official homepage “SOD, SOH” was recorded two years before its release this January, and there’s a full-length coming up later in 2009. I have to say I’m not anticipating a blockbuster, ‘cause this EP isn’t anything out of the ordinary other than the fact that it really does sound like it was recorded in 1990. Simplistic drumming and semi-groovy meat riffs with an overall sickening atmosphere (in a good, sick, sense. You know what I mean.)
Five tracks delivered in less than 17 minutes is about as much as I would want to listen to this, so EP seems to be the format they should work with. I can’t really find anything to bitch about on this record, other than the fact that when track 5 ends, I don’t get the itch to put this on again. Oh, and the lack of innovation of course, but since Cabeza’s been around since the olden days and they clearly play exactly the shit they want that’s really not an issue.
If you like Dismember or Entombed and feel like a mix with the overseas genre brothers’ contributions could work, check this out. It’s definitely not bad.
